International Studies

Courses

Students who major in International Studies choose a regional specialization such as Africa, Asia, Europe, or Latin America, and focus on two of three thematic specializations: cultural encounters, international relations, or power & production. The program is enhanced by a global competency requirement, fulfilled through either international study abroad or an internship, and a foreign language requirement.

The International Studies program is unusual at UNL because it is very extensive and supported by a wide range of courses and faculty, yet is not centered in a particular department. The program is organized with an interdisciplinary approach to the study of economic, political, geographic, and historical influences that have shaped our world, and is an important area of expanding emphasis as the university deals with its and Nebraska's place in the global community.

International Studies Interships - INTS 395

An internship can be an important addition to your program of studies. Although not required in the major or minor, having an internship experience on your resume can demonstrate to graduate schools, professional schools, or prospective employers your commitment to applying your knowledge and skills in a practical work environment.

Students earned up to six credit hours per internship under the direction of the Chief Advisor in International studies. Internship experiences included: aide at U.S. Embassy, Hamburg, Germany; teaching Spanish at Lincoln Montessori School; volunteer in orphanage, Guatemala; Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department; Immigration & Naturalization Service; DisneyWorld; intern with Senator Hagel; Matusdo Junior/Senior High School, Japan; archeology dig volunteer, France; USAID, Tanzania.

CREDIT: We usually expect the student to work ten hours per week (during Fall or Spring Semester) for 3 credit hours. A 20-hour per week internship may earn up to 6 credit hours per semester. The grading option is Pass/Fail only.

APPLICATION PROCESS: It is the students’ responsibility to line up an internship experience for possible credit in International Studies. Once that has occurred, the student submits the INTS 399-INTERNSHIP CONTRACT from to the Chief Advisor. The form requires you to provide a description of internship (including location of internship site; dates of activity; description of potential duties), in addition to describing why this activity would be appropriate for international studies credit.
